A base worker’s testimony

Philippe Pizeine, Port Captain

Setaf Saget, Bulk Division
Paris, France

« At 54, I have sailed on all types of transport vessels. The only vessel missing from my record is gas tankers! Member of the first generation of versatile sailors, I began my career as a bridge and machine officer with Messageries Maritimes, then with CGM, where I served for 20 years. The First Gulf War gave me my first command when the French Army chartered a ferry to transport troops to Kuwait.
In 1994, I joined Setaf Saget and opted for a new position in an onshore base, but not necessarily in an office. I am one of two Port Captains and I spend more than half my time in the field. My role is to guarantee the reliability and quality of the service, which is the real added value of Setaf Saget. I work in the ports to supervise loading and unloading operations, cleaning the holds and other operations in order to optimize costs by ensuring full utilization of the ship’s capacities within short time periods, and verifying the quality and quantity of the merchandise. I also monitor safety: stowing the cargo, stability, condition of the vessel, crew qualification, etc. I must anticipate the legal and financial consequences of every decision and, in particular, reconcile the dual requirements of the order giver’s shipping contract and the bulk carrier’s charter agreement.
What I really appreciate in this job is the combination of autonomy for managing operations at the site, a large variety of contacts, and the permanent support of the teams of the Operations department in Suresnes. »
